So I've done some research about it when it was on Kickstarter, but haven't played it. It is indeed very expensive..
It is both a long and complex game, so the amount of times it will hit the table will probably be.. Not often

For some that is a no-go, as they want games that can be played regulerary, while others find it perfectly fine to have grand games that comes on now and then on "big" occasions
If you plan a full Saturday dedicated to it, with the right group who enjoy competitive war games, then I think it can be a hit. There are definitely some conflicted opinions though. Some seem to love it, while some seem to hate it

In other words it will probably depend greatly on your gaming group.
The board game seems to be a pretty good adaptation though for what it's worth, at least that is what I've read based on those who have played both.
